Righthaven.com Crystal Jellyfish Nominees
Righthaven.com is accepting nominations for the annual Crystal Jellyfish award. The award is presented to that person or organization who, in their cowardice or by way of their rank and noxious sycophancy, did the most damage to digital press freedoms in the past year. Nominees are voted on by the general public and those receiving the most votes will advance to a final round for voting before the end of the year. Proposed nominations from the public are most welcome. Two kinds of spinelessness characterize the qualities we look for in spineless jellyfish:
- Unquestioning compliance or quiet acquiescence in the face of private or governmental efforts to suppress the freedom of expression, particularly where these lapses are in the pursuit of personal or corporate gain. (The hosting provider that pulls content down without question at there mere sight of an improperly formed DMCA takedown request).
- Overt acts or omissions that demonstrate an unwillingness to tolerate the necessary and occasionally irritating by-products of freedom of expression. (The politician who seeks to protect a dying industry from the consequences of their disintermediation).
To forward your suggestion to the nominations committee email: crystaljellyfish@right[PIPA]haven.com (Kill the [PIPA] to bypass our spam censor) including the identity of the proposed spineless jellyfish and a brief (or lengthly) description of their spineless deeds. Vote early (but not often, please).
And the nominees are:
Christine Jones: Crystal Jellyfish Citation
Christine Jones distinguished herself by actions of exceptionally yielding flaccidity in late 2011 and the early weeks of 2012 while serving as an Executive Vice President, Corporate Secretary and General Counsel at the United States based hosting provider "GoDaddy" where her duties included managing all legal affairs of GoDaddy as well as the Domain Services, Network Abuse, Government Relations, Compliance and Legal departments.
During this period, and with full knowledge of the resistance that might face her and the limited prospects for support from friendly forces, Jones, who had previously distinguished herself in the 60 Day Registrar Lock and Internet User ID Verification campaigns, mounted an offensive in support of Operation Stop Online Piracy within the United States legislative theater of operations.
Using all the weapons available to her including her personal Twitter account, personal blog, her leadership role in the information technology community, strong relations with allied commanders in the United States Congress and heedless of the traditional demarcation between personal and client advocacy, Jones executed tactical and strategic maneuvering in a skillful and stealthy display that caught the opposition by surprise during the final phases of the assault.
Under coordinated artillery support from her congressional testimony battery and with the help of psychological operations specialists from the 2nd Lobbyist battalion K Street, Jones participated in a daring tactical deception, pressing the advantage of surprise.
As the assault neared its objectives it became apparent that Jones had been provided with faulty intelligence with respect to the location and disposition of opposing forces. Artillery strikes from the congressional testimony battery had fallen on positions occupied by irregular forces of the activist brigade attached to the headquarters of the Reedit division, which had been on stand-down at the time. Alerted to the threat the activist brigade, supported by elements of a number of other axis units mobilized and launched a relentless counterattack. The enemy vastly outnumbered Jones who was quickly surrounded.
At this critical juncture, Jones, with reckless regard for her unit's safety and facing withering digital fire, executed a rapid, and complete tactical withdraw from the theater of operations, before finally rebuilding and taking position behind the Chinese wall between personal and professional legal advocacy (which had been destroyed during the units rapid advance). From this position, Jones repelled several probes by opposing forces, refusing to be drawn to the field. In addition, as the field headquarters unit was in danger of being overrun by opposing forces, Jones remained in the headquarters until the last possible moments destroying classified materials lest they fall into the hands of the enemy, working again with friendly PsyOps forces to spin the destruction as a humanitarian aid effort.
The extraordinary flaccidity and evasiveness displayed by Jones are in the highest invertebrate traditions of the Crystal Jellyfish and reflect great spineless credit on her, her client Go Daddy and the hosting industry. Accordingly we are proud to introduce Christine Jones as a 2012 nominee for the Righthaven.com Crystal Jellyfish Award.
Is she worthy of this honor?
